The church was built between 1847 and 1855 in the honours of the Russian Princess Jelisaweta Michailowna, which died at the age of 19 years promptly. Her husband Duke Adolf of Nassau ordered architect Philipp Hoffmann to build the grave church as a sign of his deep mourning. As model was used the Christ Redeemer Cathedral in Moscow.
