The church was built between 1847 and 1855 in the honours of the Russian Princess Jelisaweta Michailowna, which died at the age of 19 years promptly. Her husband Duke Adolf of Nassau ordered architect Philipp Hoffmann to build the grave church  as a sign of his deep mourning. As model was used the Christ  Redeemer Cathedral in Moscow.

The author of this drawing  Ernst Philipp of Bernuth , German landscape painter, royal Prussian officer, *6.6.1833 house Aspel b. Rees, † 30.12.1923 Duesseldorf, there since 1868 resident. Education in Wesel. Starting from 1852 military career, 1867 as a captain posed to the arrangement, 1870 with outbreak French-German war appointment as the commander of stage in Duesseldorf. First autodidact. First indication and mark attempts together with the friends Ludwig H. Becker and Ernst Bosch in Wesel. Studied  1886-70 in the academy Duesseldorf (Landscape class) under Oswald Achenbach. Friendship with Carl Thiel, Hubert Salentin, Robert Cauer. - Painted particularly sun-through-flooded forest landscapes with stays on the Rhine, in the Eifel, the Teutoburger forest and Austria. The composition of landscapes cutouts, often from increased point of view seen, follows the tradition of the Düsseldorfer landscape painting and the tendencies of its teacher justified by Friedrich Wilhelm Schirmer in the 40´s to self-willed nature cutouts and loose, soft coloredness.
