High quality portrait of a dog with distance landscape in background is typical exemple of Viennese Biedermeier time work. It was executed in 1840s by renown Austrian landscape and animal artist Josef Heicke (1811 - Vienna - 1861). He studied at the Viennese Art Academy , undertook study journeys to Italy, Hungary and Orient. He is usually called as one of the artistic descendants Friedrich Gauermanns. In numerous landscapes with domestic animals he shows still sentimental idyllic impact of the resounding Biedermeier period. However were popular his landscapes, alive seized scenes from the Viennese revolution years 1848 and 1849 and representations from the sport life of the Viennese Society.
