Masterfully portrait watercolour depicts Baroness Bülow ( due to the old backside inscription). Probably it is Bertha Mary Marenholtz-Bülow ( 1810 Küblingen Brunswick - 1893 in Dresden), Descended from the noble family von Bulow in Mecklenburg, she was a women´s rights activist and prominent German kindergarten teacher and prominent figure within the Froebel movement. Through her, the founder of the kindergarten, Friedrich Froebel, was "an internationally known and most respected German educator" (see wikipedia).The author of this fine portrait watercolour - famous Viennese portrait and miniature painter Leopold Fischer (1814 - Vienna - 1860). The artist was very well-known Viennese portrait miniaturist, watercolor artist and lithographer. He studied at the Vienna Academy and began exhibiting in 1832. For a long time he lived in Italy and in London, where at the Royal Academy he exhibited six miniature portraits of the London high society members. Also a lot of his portrait watercolours belonged to old Russian collections, because many of his sitters were noble Russians (see in google.ru : "Portrait of Elizaveta Petrovna Potjemkin "and "Portrait of M.I.Beck-Lamsdorf as a child" , now in Moscow museum of Tropinin).

Inscription: on the reverse - two old German inscriptions with the name of the artist and the name of the sitter.
Technique: watercolours on paper, luxuriousy original period gold-plated wood framewith metal corner applications, velvet matt and inside fire-gilt bronze oval frame.
Measurements: painted in oval, image unframed 6 1/10" x 7 2/3" (15,5 x 19,5 cm); framed and matted w 8 1/2 " x h 10 1/5" (21,5 x 26 cm).
Condition: in very good condition. |
