Matthaeus Kern (1801 Riedhausen - Baden, Germany - 1852  Vienna) was an acknowledged Austrian portrait, landscape and miniature painter who lived and worked in Vienna during the 1st half of the 19th century. He studied under Peter Krafft at the Vienna Academy of Art and became a popular portraitist and painter of interiors of Austrian castles receiving plenty of commissions from the Imperial family and Viennese high society. During the revolution of 1848 he left Vienna and went to his native Riedhausen. Then he was active in Switzerland to then come back to Vienna again in 1851. In 1843 on commission of Franz Joseph´s mother Archduchess Sophie he painted a miniature with a group portrait of the royal family. His portraits show the influence of Daffinger and Josef Kriehuber. Many works by him belong to museums and private collections.
