Matthaeus Kern (1801 Riedhausen - Baden, Germany - 1852 Vienna) was an acknowledged Austrian portrait, landscape and miniature painter who lived and worked in Vienna during the 1st half of the 19th century. He studied under Peter Krafft at the Vienna Academy of Art and became a popular portraitist and painter of interiors of Austrian castles receiving plenty of commissions from the Imperial family and Viennese high society. During the revolution of 1848 he left Vienna and went to his native Riedhausen. Then he was active in Switzerland to then come back to Vienna again in 1851.
