High quality portrait of a Cavalry officer of the Vienna National Guard, 1848-1849 (there is a monogramm on the horse-cloth) was executed in 1848 by famous military painter B.Bachmann-Hohmann, active in Leipzig and Vienna in the 1840/50s. The artist is listed in numerous dictionaries, among other in the "General Dictionary of Painters from Antiquity to the Present" by Thieme/becker, Leipzig, 1999 and in the "Austrian Painters of the 19th Century" by Dr.H.Fuchs, Vienna 1978. The artist was famous in the middle of the 19th century for his military and battle scenes: for example "Battle at Babolna on 28 December 1848", "Resting Military Horses", "Fight of Austrian Dragoons against Hungarians, Episode of the Hungarian Resistance 1848-49" (dated 1850), "Episode from Battle at Comorn in 1849". Bachmann-Hohmann is also known in Leipzig, where he created a series of paintings as well as portraits of celebrities and noblemen of that time. His paintings are located in the City Museum of Leipzig and in the Historical Museum of Vienna. Even during his life he exhibited his paintings at the exhibitions of the Austrian Artists Unit (in German: Kunstverein).
