Emil Adam was a member of the famous Munich family of animalist, especially horse, painters. He was born in 1843 in Munich as a son of Benno Adam, studied under his father and uncle Franz Adam. Already in 1860 he painted several horse portraits for the Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria. Numerous commissions from Austrian and Bohemian royal families and high aristocracy followed. The artist was especially popular among English and French sportsmen as one of the best horse painters of his time.
