Romantical view of the Bay of Antibes with Fort Carre and Sarazen towers in the background was executed in 1841 by renowned German landscape painter Johann Anton Castell (1810 - Dresden - 1867). Since 1827 he studied at the Academy in Dresden, relegated in 1828 because of irregular visit. 1829 student by J.C. Dahl. Then alive in Dresden except for some trips to Bohemia, southern Germany, Vienna, Salzburg, Tirol,Switzerland, South France and North Italy. Coastal views from his travells to South France and North Italy are more rare as others, it's known only few paintings: " View of Toulon by sunset"; very similar in the style to our work "View of fortress city in the Po-valley" (see last addtional photo) and our work "Bay of Antibes" (source: www.artprice.com). The landscape painter highly regarded in his time, he used the pictorial realism in the service of a craft efficient Vedute art he learned by Dahl. Numeros views of Dresden, which he sometimes repeated, of varying quality. In doing so, he preferred dramatic sunsets with reddish evening skies and thus achieved moods in the sense of an externalized sentimental romance. - Etchings after some of his paintings by Fleischmann and Pesch ; Lithograph by Carl Wilhelm Arldt after drawings of some debris sites from the Dresden revolution days of 1849.
