High quality portrait miniature on ivory of a young sailor was executed in 1842 by listed French painter and miniature artist Ernest Joseph Angelon Girard (1813 Paris - 1898). He was student by Isabey and Hollier. Debuted at exhibitions of the Salon in 1835. His miniatures are very rare on the art market, a few of them are in the Wallace collection , London and Brooklin Museum in New York.

Inscription: signed and dated 1842 on the right edge; on the back - antique inscription about the sitter in French, in English translation: „ made in the age of 24 years old, born 1818“.

Technique: Gouache on ivory, original period wood frame with stamp of a frame producers and a noble collector , both on the back of the frame.

Measurements: unframed w 2 1/2" x h 3 1/8" (6,5 x 8 cm); framed w 5" x 5 5/8" (12,5 x 14,2 cm).

Condition: in very good condition.
