Monumental marine work with three trading ships off the southern coast of Beirut ( for comparison see similar work by the same artist sold on 28.11. 18 in the sale of Drouot-Richelieu) was executed in 1920s by high-quoted German marine painter Michael Zeno Diemer (1867 Munich - 1939 Oberammergau ). The artist studied from 1884 in Munich by Gabriel Hackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer. Diemer was known for his impressive battle pictures and depictions of great sailing ships in rough seas. 1894 was created in Innsbruck in six months of work a 1,000 m² giant round painting, which represents the battle on the Bergisel of 13th August 1809, in which Andreas Hofer led the Tyroleans to victory over the troops of Napoleon and Bavaria. The giant round painting is one of 30 panoramic pictures of the 19th or early 20th century still preserved worldwide.A panorama, created in the year 1896, depicted the fight for Bazeilles during the Battle of Sedan in the Franco-Prussian War. It was shown in a specially built building in Mannheim. For the German museum in Munich he created several paintings, including a representation of a Roman aqueduct for the department "hydraulic Engineering", an ideal image of a medieval herb garden and the landing of the Zeppelin in Munich 1909. In Stuttgart he endowed the brewery restaurant Ketterer with a cycle of 14 large-format paintings on the history of Swabian emigrants. Diemer also has numerous landscape and naval images, watercolours, poster designs and postcard motifs (including aerial shipments). He also worked as a musician and composer. Diemer´s son was the pilot Franz Zeno.
