View of a church (Demetrius church ?) in Vladimir, the former capital of mediaeval Russia. This watercolour was executed in 1915 during WWI by important Austrian painter Rudolf Weber (Vienna 1872 - 1949 Krems).

Rudolf Weber was a pupil of the theatre painter Anton Brioschi. Graduated from the state school and studied at the Vienna Academy with Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. Originally a landscape painter, Weber preferred motifs from the mountains and southern areas. He exhibited regularly at the Viennese Künstlerhaus. In 1900 he moved to Spitz on the Danube. There he concentrated almost exclusively on the representation of the Wachau, especially on the surroundings of Spitz. In 1921 he moved to Stein on the Danube. He married the painter Anna Carpenter (1881 – 1955). Joint study trips led him to South Tyrol to the Lake Garda and to the Adriatic Sea. From 1933 he worked in Krems on the Danube and belonged to the Wachau artist Federation.

Weber painted the realistic tradition connected mainly Austrian and Italian landscape motifs but also portraits. In addition to watercolors, Weber´s fine landscapes painted on paper by gouache, but also his Pastos and partly in filler technology oil paintings are known.
