Monumental and masterfully seascape with French ships and a a coastal town somewhere in the French Britanny was executed by Wilhelm Emil Meyer-Rhodius ( 1815 - Cologne - 1897 ). He was the student of renowned seascape painter Andreas Achenbach at the Duesseldorf Academy and our painting also shows the influence of the author’s famous teacher. Meyer‘s seascapes are in museums of Antwerp and Cologne.

Literature: " Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenen Künstler " by Thieme / Becker. Leipzig, 1999.; J.J.Merlo „ Kunst und Künstler in Köln“, 1850; Singer „Kuenstlerlexikon“, III, p.148 (as Mayer).

Inscription: signed and dated 1877 lower right.

Technique: oil on canvas, original period partly gold-plated frame.

Measurements: unframed w 48 3/4" x h 37 3/4" ( ohne 124 x 96 cm); framed w 65" x h 54"(165 x 137 cm).

Condition: in very good condition, original canvas was professionally cleaned.
