Rare historical military painting " Bombardment of Ascona by the Austrian K&K Navy 1915" by renowed Austrian marine painter August von Ramberg (Wessely / March, Moravia 1866 - 1947 Gmunden, Upper Austria).

  The author of this important work August von Ramberg was a nephew of the k.u.k. General of the cavalry Hermann von Ramberg and the painter and draftsman Arthur von Ramberg. He graduated from the k. u. k. Naval Academy in Fiume and retired in 1885 as a naval cadet. In 1885 and 1886 he navigated on board the corvette "Danube" North and South America, was the commander of torpedo boats and navigation officer on larger units. In 1892/93 he accompanied the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand on his world tour on board the cruiser "Kaiserin Elisabeth".In 1904 Ramberg was on leave on sick leave and dedicated himself to marine painting as a self-taught artist. From 1908 he lived on his property in Ragusa.

Inscription: signed u. dated "A. v. Ramberg 1940", lower right, two antique bronze plaques: in the middle under image : "A.von Ramnberg" and in the middle upper image in German: "Beschiessung von Ascona durch die KuK Kriegsmarine 1915" (in English: Bombardment of Ascona by the Austrian K&K Navy 1915).

Technique: oil on canvas. Original period frame.

Measurements: unframed w 39 1/3" x h 26" (100 x 66 cm), framed w 44 1/2" x h 31 1/8" (113 x 79 cm)

Condition: in good condition, canvas professionally relined.
