He was Archduke of Austria from the House of Habsburg-Lothringen, from 1765 to 1790 (as Peter Leopold) Grand Duke of Tuscany and from 1790 to 1792 Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary.
Leopold was born the ninth child of Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria and the Roman-German Emperor Franz Stephan of Lorraine. Leopold´s youngest sister was Marie Antoinette, born in 1755, who later became Queen of France. We attributed this work to the hand of italian painter Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787)) or the artist of his cirlce. Famous painting by Batoni, depicted Leopold as Grand Duke with his older brother Austrian Emperor Joseph II, was executed by the author c. in 1720-1730 , our painting was executed in the same time and depicts fragment of this work: half-length portrait of Leopold in the same costume.
