Romantic Sicilian landscape with far view to Messina was executed in 1861 by German painter and drawer Johann Friedrich Stock (1800 in Bremen - 1866 in Breslau). Similar Sicilian landscape , dated in the same 1861 year, was sold in the Casa dAste Babuino on 14.04.2004 ( See additional image).

Johann Friedrich Stock studied in 1824 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He then worked in Berlin as a landscape and architectural painter and was employed as a draftsman in the studio of Paul Gropius, the son of Carl Wilhelm Gropius. In 1839 he exhibited a series of oil paintings. He created numerous drawings for engravings of Berlin buildings and cityscapes, which were represented in gallery works such as the Spiker. In 1851 he traveled to Rome and Naples.

Inscription: numbered, signed and dated lower left: " 203, I.F.Stock, 1861", on the back of the canvas - artist‘s memory inscription in German: "Nr. 203, bei Messina, J.F. Stock, Berlin, 1861".

Material: oil on canvas, original period frame.

Dimensions: unframed w 28" x h 19 3/4" (71 x 50 cm), framed w 37 3/8"x h 29 1/8" (95 x 74 cm)

Condition: very good condition.
