View of a monastery at north Italian lake was executed Austrian-Italian landscape painter, watercolorist and etcher Johann Varrone (Italian Giovanni Battista Varrone), (1832 in Bellinzona - 1910 Mödling) He is Origin from Swiss canton Ticino on lake Lugano.
Varrone studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Joseph Höger. From 1861 he became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus. Together with Ladislaus Eugen Petrovits he created watercolors for 50 views of Vienna and the surrounding area (1891).
He painted panoramas of Austrian alpine landscapes and also created illustrations for magnificent works of the monarchy. Some of his works are in the Museum of the City of Vienna and in the Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck.
