Impressionist summer forest painting with shepherd and sheep
was executed in the late 19th century and due to the fully identical subject, manner and composition as well as the presence of a well-known pseudonym Schwartz was attributed to the hand of Austrian landscape and architecture painter Karl Kaufmann (1843-1905). He studied at Vienna Academy and was active in Vienna in the 1900s. His European cityscapes and landscapes brought him the world glory.

Our painting was signed by the artist with his pseudonym” A.Schwartz". This pseudonym is one of many  pseudonyms adopted by artist Karl Kaufmann to circumvent the exclusionary contracts many 19th c. art dealers and galleries compelled their artists to sign. It was not unusual for popular artists to have contracts at various galleries under different names; this enabled them to offer their works in different venues without breaking any legally binding contractual agreements. They were thus afforded the opportunity for more sales.
