Portrait of a peasant lacemaker was executed in 1852 by Czech genre and portrait painter Antonin Hoelperl (1820 Horni Slavkov - 1880 Praque). The artist was initially an apprentice painter in two porcelain factories until he was able to follow his urge for art and went to Vienna to enter the academy. But since he didn't succeed in this, he contented himself with studying the galleries. In 1846 he went on a study trip to Salzburg, in 1851 he went to Karlsbad for a few years, where he painted portraits and genre paintings, and in 1853 he settled in Prague, where he gradually developed into an accomplished artist in these subjects.
