Due to the identical style, composition and comparison with other works by the same artist we attributed this oriental portrait to the hand of ourstanding Austrian genre and portrait painter Hans Canon ( 1829 -1885). For comparison see additional image of other work by Canon from our collection. In 1845 Canon became a student of Vienna Academy and studied under Georg Waldmueller and Carl Rahl. The artist undertook several travels to England, France, Italy and to the Orient. In 1860 and 1863-69 Canon lived and taught in Karlsruhe. 1869-74 he worked in Stuttgart and later in Vienna. In 1877 Canon was awarded with Carl Ludwig Medal, 1882 with Large Gold State Medal and in 1883 with Reichel Prize. Since 1861 Canon had been a member of Vienna Artists Unit. Works of Canon are located in Vienna National Museum as well as in Leopold Museum.
