View of Latvian coast of Baltic Sea was executed in the early 20th Century by good listed Latvian painter of Russian origin
Alexander Ivanovitch Petrov (1874 Voronezh gubernia, Russian Empire – 1956 Valmiera, Latvia).

Alexander Petrov learned the basics of painting in the art studio of L. Dmitriev - Kavkazsky in St. Petersburg (around 1896 - 1901), later he improved in Italy (1901 - 02) and in Munich (1905).

A. Petrov was deeply influenced by the works of the Russian landscape painter and wanderer I. Levitan.
The artist became friends and maintained contacts throughout his life with the Latvian graphic artist Teodors Ūders

, who in 1907 invited Petrov to come to Latvia, where he remained to live in Valmiera.

He began to take part in exhibitions in St. Petersburg in 1909. The first exhibition in Latvia where the artist exhibited his works was in 1913. Petrov also became involved in the Society of Independent Artists (1922 – 40) and took part in exhibitions.

Member of the Latvian Artists' Union since 1945.

In addition to his creative activities, the artist worked as a teacher at the Valmiera gymnasium and a commercial school.

The main theme of Petrov’s work is Valmiera, Baltic coast and the landscapes of its surroundings. In addition to oil paintings, in the 1920s he also worked in pastels.
