Amberg, Wilhelm (August Lebrecht) was german painter and graphik artist, born 25.2.1822 in Berlin - died 1899 in Berlin He studied in the Art Academy in Berlin under W. Herbig, 1839-42 was assistent by Karl Begas . 1844/45 further training with L Cogniet in Paris; to 1847 Italy stay. since 1869- member of Berlin Akad., since 1886 member of Senat, 1873 Kunstmed. Vienna, 1877 small golden Med. . In the beginning he was active with . mythological. motives and Portr.; since the 60´s became one of most popular genre painters of Berlin, whose paintings with anekdotical, humorous-sentimental kind occasionally sweet colouring came to meet the public taste. Besides love motives he treated frequently scenes from the Rococo time.
