Very fine large seascape painting by good listed Russian marinist Alexis Hanzen ( 1876 Odessa - 1937 Dubrovnik). He was marine painter and graphik artist, grandson and pupil of world-known marine painter Ivan Konstantinovitch Aivazovsky .

Professor, marinist, collector, honored member of different art society in Odessa, Petersburg, Hanzen in the beginning studied in Munich , later in Academies in Dresden and Berlin. In 1903 he took part in the great Berlin Exhibition"Depeshenboot". In 1898 - 1904 he took part in exhibitions of "TJURCH"(Union of south-russian painters) in Odessa and in exhibition of Art Academy in St.Petersburg. After travell to Italy he moved to Paris, where studied by E.R.Fleure and J.Lefevre.In 1907 he exhibited with his work "Black Sea" and awarded Prize "Mention honorable".He was a member of russian painter union in Paris.In this period he created about 100 marine paintings, which were bought by different collectors from Paris to London and USA. The state France bought his painting "After Storm". In 1904-1905 he created works about russian-japan war . In 1909 he travelled to Crimea and Caucasus and with travel works over Crimea , Caucasus , Volga and Konstantinopol he went in 1907 to Paris, organized in the Gallery of the Artistes modern a special exhibition and fed the salon of artists Francais in 1907/1912 with further virtuos painted sea-pieces and landscapes from all areas of Europe. 1910 he opened his exhibiton in the "International Art gallery". In the same year he went back to Odessa . Since 1914 he lived and worked in St.petersburg, he created batlle scenes , which were reproducted in the famous magazines of the time. In 1920s he lived with the wife in Zagreb/ Kingdom of Jugoslavia,in this time his works were exhibited in Zagreb, Praque ,Rome, Buharest, Rio-de-Janejro, Buenos-Ajres, Paris ( Gallery Georg Pti". For his life Hanzen created more than 3000 works, including graphik, small miniatures ( like our work). His works situated in the different museums of St.Petersburg , Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Odessa.

Inscription: signed lower left , on reverse of the stretcher signed , dated and inscribed Dubrovnik 1936.
