The Battle of Novara (in northern Italy, between Turin and Milan) was one of the battles fought between the Austrian Empire (troops under Field Marshal Radetzky) and the Kingdom of Sardinia during the First Italian War of Independence, within the era of Italian unification. Lasting the whole day of 22 March 1849 and ending at dawn on 23 March, it resulted in a severe defeat and retreat of the Piedmontese (Sardinian) army.

The author of our battle work is famous German military painter and Bavarian captain Ludwig Behringer (1824 Wuerzburg - 1903 Munich). Acquired a name of good sound as a painter. His paintings were highlighted: "Marching Scene" (1866); "Cossacks invade a Train"; "Ulans" (1871); "Scene from the 30jahrigen War" (1883); "Maneuver episode" (1886). B. also operated as lithographer, including "Cuirassiers on horseback and on foot" (1860) and the two works " the Bavarian army in its latest uniformity" and "the uniforms of the Bavarian army in 1682-1848".
