A pair of fine small landscapes was executed in 1862 by important Dutch painter Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819 - The Haque - 1866). He made mostly landscapes in a romantic style. He also wrote poems.Hoppenbrouwers studied law in Leiden and established himself as a lawyer in Breda. Later he was also judge. In his spare time he practiced poetry and painting. His painting leadership was given to the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and then in the workshop of Andreas Schelfhout. He painted in a romantic style, which, in composition and atmosphere, strongly reminds his teacher Schelfhout.
Hoppenbrouwers was best known for his winter and summer landscapes, where he often left the figure stoffage to his friend Charles Rochussenstraat, sometimes also to others like David Bles and Salomon Verveer. In addition, he also made some panoramic views on a small size, often with the mountainous Rhine bank as the subject.
Hoppenbrouwers exhibited regularly at the exhibitions of Living Masters. He was the teacher of Louis Apol. In 1867, he died at the age of 47. His work is located in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Amsterdam Museum, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. And the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. The Metropolitan Museum in New York also has a winter landscape of Hoppenbrouwers in its collection.
