Portrait of a Galician Jew cutting a loaf of bread. Behind him on the table a bottle of wine or water. this genre work was executed on the turn of 20th Century by listed Austrian painter of Jewish original Josef Urban. He was born in Vienna in 1872, studied here at the Academy, worked in Vienna as decoration painter, illustrator, architect and stage designer. In 1898 was awarded with Kaiserpreis (emperor prize). Since 1905 to 1908 was member and president of the Hagenbund artist union. After coming to power of the Nazis, he emigrated to USA, he died in New York in 1933.
