This nude painting was executed in 1886 in Istanbul by high noted Italian artist Stefano Farneti (1855 Pisa-1926 Naples). He came with his father, who had relations as a merchant with the Orient as a child to Warsaw and later to Salonica, and Paris. Studied since 1875 on the Academy of Naples and then returned to Paris, where he since 1883 exhibited at the Salon of the Society des artistes franc. landscapes, portraits, and oriental genre paintings. He was temporarily in Istanbul, where he painted a ceiling in the hotel Luxembourg. Farnesi then won after a thorough study of nature in Paris, became a member of the Parisian SOC. of the art. Franc. and repeatedly exhibited in the Salon of the national society since 1890. In particular he presented in Paris country breakfast (1885), collaboration (1886), A Turkish bath and rest room in 1887, 1888, Turks praying and studing, A street in Naples in 1889 (purchased by Warsaw artists society). In 1891 Farneti joined the Neapolitan society of artists (then artistic circle Polytechnic), his marine was bought by Galleria Arte Moderna. One of his best works is an interior with half figure of a lady at the piano (issued in Berlin in 1894 and 1895). Literature: in Italian: Comanducci, I, 1982; in French: E.Benezit "Dictionanaire des peintures, sculpteurs, dessinateurs et graveurs", Pari, 1999; in German: Thieme/Becker, Lepzig, 1999; artnet date bank. Inscription: signed, inscribed and dated lower left: “ S.Farneti, Stamboul, 1886“. The kind of the signature is fully identical with the artist’s signature on the painting " In the harem". The city name Stamboul was used in western languages instead “Istanbul“ until 1930 (source-Wikipedia). Technique: oil on wood panel, original period frame. Measurements: unframed w 23 5/8" x h 14 1/8" ( 60 x 36 cm), framed w 29 1/2" x h 20" (75 x 51 cm). Condition: sehr good, profess. cleaned, no any inpaintings or paintlosses.
