Our painting purchased from the property of Royal House of Hanover ( important "century"auction of Sotheby´s in Castle Marienburg "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover", 5 - 15 October 2005, Lot 1825) as portrait of Friederike, Princess of Hannover (1848-1926) Granddaughter of Queen Friederike and daugther of Queen Marie (Sachsen Altenburg) and Georg V of Hannover. This work was long time inventory of the castle Blankenburg in Saxony_Anhalt (see inventory label on additional photo). The author of this pportrait is unknown, one of the court painters of Hanover Royals.

According to her Wikipedia article, Frederike was born 9 January 1848 in Hanover, the elder daughter of the Hereditary Prince of Hanover (later King George V of Hanover) and of his wife, Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. She held the title of Princess with the style Her Royal Highness in Hanover. In the United Kingdom, she held the title of Princess with the style Her Highness as a male-line great-granddaughter of King George III.Princess Frederica´s dress on our portrait can only be roughly dated using this image, but it would be from the 1870s based on the trapezoidal neckline and elaboration. The absence of a vee waistline suggests a cuirasse bodice from the later 1870s.

Provenance: purchased from the artist by Hanover Royal family in 1834, since that time - the property of Royal House of Hanover , by the last owner purchased on important "century"-auction of Sotheby´s in the Castle Marienburg "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover", 5 - 15 October 2005, Lot 1825).
