Due to the research of experts of Dorotheum auction house this high qualitive multi-figured military painting depicts the Archduke Karl of Austria at the battle again French troops at Aldenhoven or at the battle at Neerwinden, both in March 1793.

Basically it was two battles after each other in 1793: the battle of Aldenhoven in North Rhine-Westphaliaon March 1st, 1793 and at Neerwinden in Belgium on March 18th, in the course of the first coalition war against revolutionary France. They both ended with an Austrian victory under the command of Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg and Archduke Karl of Austria over the French army.

The author of this work is Austrian military painter August Ritter von Maly ( 1835 Verona - 1893 Wiener Neustadt). He studied at the Fine Art Academy in Vienna under Christian Ruben. He was an Austrian officer and professor in Wiener Neustadt by Vienna.

For comparison of our work with another two battle scenes by the same artist, from the Royal property in Hanover, sold by Sotheby’s in 2005 see our additional images.
