Early 20th century village scene on the Adriatic coast was executed in the Pointillism style by Croatian painter of Italian origin Pietro Persicalli (1886 Zadar - 1977 Zadar). Here is his biography from Comanducci artist lexicon : Born in Zadar in 1886. He began his studies at the Academy of Munich, disciple of Kim and Hugo Habermann, then went to Rome, finally to Vienna, where he participated for a few years to the artistic life and made his debut at the Circle of artists. At that time he exhibited also at the Salone degli Indipendenti in Paris. After the first European war he has participated with several works at the First Roman Biennial at the Spring Fiorentina of 1922 with: "The siren"; "Calm"; "Thistles by the sea" '; "Young peasant "," Šibenik peasant "and" Zadar peasant ", at the Exhibition of Book illustrators and decorators held in Florence in the same year; at the Exhibitions of decorative art of Monza. He has also held solo exhibitions, in Florence, Milan, Como, Trieste, Zurich. Lively colourist, with a freely pointillist technique, he prefers to reproduce the aspects of the Adriatic beach and the gaudy costumes Dalmatians. In his paintings, among which are still cited "Self-portrait". "Transparencies" (property of Mr. Mario Levi of Milan) and the three evocations of the "Kornati Islands" the decorative sense always predominates, both for the cut and for the composition. Literature: artist lexicons by Vollmer ( in German) and Comanducci ( in Italian). Inscription: signed lower right. Technique: oil on canvas, original period gilt frame. Measurements: unframed w 26 3/4" x h 31 1/2" (90 x 90 cm); framed w 38 5/8" x h 43 1/3" (98,5 x 98,5 cm). Condition: very good condition.
