Extremely rare historical and ethnographic views of Bagamojo and international consular missions in Sansibar around 1890, i.e. in the period of German colony in East Africa (1885 - 1918). Both watercolours were executed by important German Africa researcher, colonial writer, war reporter and painter Conrad Weidmann ( 1847 Diessenhofen - 1904 Luebeck).

Weidmann studied in Zurich, travelled from 1864 to Germany, France and Italy and then settled in Lübeck in 1872. His series of drawings, published in 1882, depicting the development of Lübeck's architectural history, was published by the royal family. Prussian Ministry of Culture.

Once again, the migratory instinct prevailed.

In 1888 there was an uprising in German East Africa against the attempt of the DOAG to extend its rule over the one in Sansibar of today's Tanzania. The Reich government then sent the African-experienced Hermann Wissmann as Reich Commissar, under the promotion to captain, to enforce German rule and to support Emin Pasha. On 8 May 1889, the fortified camp of the rebel leader Buschiri near Bagamoyo was stormed. In quick succession, Saadani, Pangani and Tanga were then taken. As a member of the protection force, Weidmann was on site. He was the reporter of the "Hamburer Nachrichten" and illustrator of the "Illustrirten Zeitung from Leipzig". The intervention of the German Reich was presented in public as a measure against the Arab slave trade. It was therefore carried out in accordance with the international legal provisions of the Congo Act. He also took part in coastal marches from the northernmost points of Muoa via Tanga to Pangani, Mquadja, Saadani to Bagamoyo and Dar-es-Salaam; on expeditions to Dunda, Yombo and the Kingani-Wami Delta. In 1890 he took part in the battles at Palamaka and the capture of Kiloa, Lindi and Mikin-dani, and during his stay he provided about 50 drawings with accompanying text and a large number of reports. As a tribute to the strenuous marches and battles, Weidmann's health was severely attacked. After an 11/2-year stay, he had to return home in September 1890. Also our watercolours dated August 1890 were executed by him one month before his Africa departure

In Africa, Weidmann's colonial interest awoke. Back in Lübeck, he wrote the lexicon German Men in Africa. The Grand Duke of Weimar awarded him the White Falcon Order for this purpose. In many lectures and speeches, Weidmann sought to promote the cause of the German colonies. In colonial society, especially in the Lübeck department, he was highly respected. When its chief executive elected him as his member, Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg sent him his picture. For more than ten years, he was the first secretary to be a member of the board. At his suggestion, a great colonial festival took place in the autumn of 1904.

In addition to the colonial society, the All-German Association or the non-profit society, he also worked for the Lübeckische Blätter. For years, the last time he reported on the works of art on display in Nöhring's salon, the last time he wrote before his obituary. He did this by recognizing the talent of the younger ones, including some Lübeckers, and sympathetically accompanying the changes in art.

His obituary stated that he had been a man who selflessly surrendered to life, where his strength and great abilities demanded it and consumed his life in the service of ideal duties. Bismarck's word Patriae inserviendo consumor also applied to him.
