This coloured terracotta figure of a Arab woman was executed in the late 19th century by Austrian entrepreneur, terracotta and bronze manufacturer Friedrich Goldscheider (1845 Slabetz/Bohemia - 897 Nice, France). He founded his manufactory in Vienna under the name ‘Goldscheidersche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik’ in 1885.

His pieces matched the spirit of the times during the time around 1900 – and particularly in the 1920s.  His pieces were well known internationally; they were made of faience, terracotta, bronze and alabaster and represented historicist, art nouveau, art deco and orientalist styles.

With the beginning of the First World War, the close cooperation between the Paris branch and the Vienna headquarters
broke off. In the interwar years, Arthur Goldscheider hid his Viennese roots and referred to his company as Maison
franco-tchèque, which almost exclusively represented artists with French names. In Paris he now operated under
the name Arthur Goldscheider, Éditeur d’Art.

The Goldscheider family emigrated to England and to the US in 1938 and started new ceramic manufactories there.
