High quality portrait miniature was executed c.1805 and depicts Frederike Caroline Wilhelmine, Princess of Baden (1776 Carlsrue - 1841 Munich) in the age c. of 25-26 years old. For comparison see her image from wikipedia ( our additional image) , where she depicted a few years later. Caroline depicted on our miniature with the Cross of Russian Order of St. Catherine, which was her awarded by Russians Royal house in 1801. In 1797, when she was 21, she married the 41-year-old widowed Duke Maximilian Joseph von der Pfalz-Zweibrücken in Karlsruhe, later elector and later King of Bavaria. Since 1806 she bacame the first Queen of the newly proclaimed Kingdom of Bavaria. She was the daughter of Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig von Baden and Amalie, née Princess of Hessen-Darmstadt, the "mother-in-law of Europe", whose favorite daughter Karoline was also considered. Her younger sisters: Luise was Tsarina of Russia ( as Elisaveta Alekseevna) and Friederike - the Queen of Sweden, her only brother Karl Grand Duke of Baden. Karoline was also grand-mother of Austrian Empress Elisabeth ( Sisi). Due to the fully identical manner and the fact , that the author exact in this time painted Russian and later Bavarian royal house including sister of Karoline, the Russian empress Elisaveta Alekseevna aand other nobles, bearers of St. Ekaterina order, we attributed this museum miniature to the hand of one of the best miniature painters of Classicism r Domenico Bossi (1767 Triest - 1853 Munich ). For comparison see our few additional images of miniatures by Bossi. Literature: " List of persons, awarded with Russian Order of St.Ekaterina" (from Russian Wikipedia, ncluding images); on -line wikipedia in Russian, German and English; Bernardo Falconi und Bernd Pappe "Domenico Bossi, 1768–1853/Da Venezia al Nord Europa /La carriera di un maestro del ritratto in miniatura", Verona, 2012, p. 223-224; General Artist´s lexicons by Thieme/Becker ( in German).
