This high quality portrait of Prince Enno of East Friesland ( 1697 - 1725) was painted in 1717 by important court portrait painter in Brunswick Johann Conrad Eichler ( 1688 Peine - 1748 Wolfenbüttel). Our work was purchased in the important "century" auction "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover" of Sothebys in the castle Marienburg by Hanover on 5 - 15 October 2005 (under lot number 165).

Eichler, Johann Conrad (named Wohllust), German painter, * 1680 ( not in 1688 as at Thieme/Becker lexicon), the father of Joseph Ignaz E., Joseph E. and Julian E. From 1709 in Rome at the latest (marriage with the daughter of a Vatican soldiers). At 1713/14 trained here in the sphere of influence of Francesco Trevisani and Carlo Maratta. Member of the Dutch artist union in Rome. 1716 return home, and for a short time in Nuremberg. From 1717 "Herzogl. Hof - und Cabinetmaler" in Braunschweig (court painter of Duke of Brunswick), in 1724 birth of his son Joseph), then in Wolfenbüttel. Portrait work dominated until the 1740s. -His oeuvre consists largely portraits of princes and their relatives, especially of Duke Ludwig Rudolf of Braunschweig and his wife Christine Luise von Braunschweig. Portrait represantations in Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August Library and Museum in the castle. Additionally were created portraits of other members from the Brunswick Ruling House (including the Dukes of August Wilhelm and Karl I.) and numerous personalities , which according to the ThB landed mostly to Blankenburg (Museum of Little castle) were also two self-portraits, (an another self-portrait with family, lost) was in 1776 in the GAL. by Salzdahlum).

Provenance: purchased from the artist by Hanover Royal family in 1834, since that time - the property of Royal House of Hanover , by last owner purchased on important "century"-auction of Sotheby´s in the Castle Marienburg "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover", 5 - 15 October 2005, Lot 165.

Inscription: remains of signature lower right. Titled, signed and dated 1717 on the reverse of canvas..

Technique: oil on canvas. Luxuriousy original period gold-plated frame with crown and monogram E.(for Eduard).

Measurements: unframed h 37 3/4" x w 34 5/8" (96 x 88 cm); framed h 40 1/2" x w 37 1/2" (103 x 95 cm).

Condition: in good condition, professional cleaned, no paintlosses or inpaintings, original canvas.
