View of interior of the Basilica of San Marco, Venice was executed in 1889 by Austrian painter Tom (Thomas) von Dreger (1868 Brno - 1948 Vienna). Studied: 1884-85, 1887-88 Austrian Academy of Fine Arts there with August Eisenmenger, Siegmund L'Allemand and Heinrich von Angeli; 1889-90 Austrian Academy of Fine Arts Venice with Eugen von Blaas and Ludwig Johann Passini; 1890-91 Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Alexander von Liezen-Mayer; 1891-99 Academy of Fine Arts Paris. Afterwards worked in Vienna. 1916-18 soldier in World War I – painted mainly religious works. Depictions (altarpieces in the Votivkirche in Vienna, 1916, and in Sacre Coeur, Preßbaum, 1924; Adoration of the Magi; Last Supper, both 1916), genre scenes (The Paint Rubber; A Romanian Beggar, both shown in the Künstlerhaus Vienna in 1912; Vienna's Centenary Laundress, 1940), and portraits of members of the imperial family, ecclesiastical dignitaries (Cardinal Piffl, 1917; Cardinal Innitzer, 1933; 1935/36; Pope Pius XI), and politicians (Dr. Ignaz Seipel, 1925; Dr. Engelbert Dollfuß, 1934; Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg and his wife, 1934; Benito Mussolini).
