Still Life with Anemones was executed in 1896 by Dutch painter and watercolorist Marguérite Carolina de Clerq (Rotterdam 1857-1933 Hilversum). Marguérite de Clerq, born in 1857, specialized in still lifes, primarily flowers. In doing so, she followed in the footsteps of many flower painters before her, including Margaretha Roosenboom and Gerardine van de Sande Bakhuyzen. From 1887 onward, the painter lived and worked in Hilversum, concurrently with Margaretha Roosenboom for several years, from whom she may have been taught. In any case, de Clerq was influenced by her; her flower still lifes share the same impressionistic touch and free handling of the motif.
