Monumental historical painting ” Battle of Kahlenberg near Vienna on September 12, 1683, between the Austrian-Polish army and the Turkish army”. This work depicts the episode when the Polish cavalry breaks into the Turkish positions.
The Battle of Kahlenberg on September 12, 1683, ended the Second Siege of Vienna. A German-Polish relief army under the command of the Polish King John III Sobieski defeated the Ottoman army. The defeat marked the beginning of the end of Turkish hegemony. Fighting on the Christian side were the combined infantry and artillery of the alliance of Austria, Saxony, Bavaria, Baden, and the Papal States, as well as the Polish cavalry. Opposing them was the Ottoman army besieging Vienna.
The author of this historical painting is famous Austrian military and historical painter Karl Ludwig Hassmann ( 1868 - Vienna- 1933).
Karl Ludwig Hassman was a renown Austrian historical painiter , pupil by Sigmund l´Allemand at the Art Academy in Vienna , later at the Munich Academy by Otto Seitz and Carl Marr. In 1904 he travelled to USA for few years.as decoration painter ( german theater in New York). 1911 he returned to Vienna , became a member of artist union " Künstlerhaus", where his works were exhibited many times. He recieved the Lobmeyer-Prize . From 1904 to 1909 he was a member of another important austrian artist union " Hagenbund".
