Anselm Wagner (1766 Timisoara (Temeswar), Romania - 1806) was a son of Viennese painter Michael Wagner (1731-1783) who moved to and settled in Transylvania (Romania). Anselm studied at the Vienna Academy under the Danish artist Johann Jakob Stunder; he was also influenced by the Baroque style of Meytens, turning (around 1796) to Rococo style and later to Neoclassical (sic!) approach. From around 1799 Wagner traveled to Transylvanian towns Sibiu, Brasov, Cluj and Mintia, painting portraits of the noble Gyulay family. With time Wagner abandoned religious paintings for portraiture in oil, miniature and pastel, and made numerous portraits in Transylvania.
