Genre scene in the forest with a hunting dog spotting woodcock eggs was executed by famous Dutch-Belgian animale painter, whaterclourist and draughtswoman Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821 in Amsterdam - 1909 in Ixelles). As a pupil of her father, the painter Josephus-Augustus Knip (1777–1847), she began depicting animals, especially dogs and cats, at an early age. In her later work, she focused primarily on portraying cats of all kinds in luxurious settings.

Henriëtte Ronner-Knip was a member of the Cercle des femmes peintres, the Belgian association of women artists, which organized group exhibitions of works by female artists from 1888 to 1893.
