He was a Belgian painter of beach scenes and landscapes in general. He is known for his skill in depicting horses. He trained in Antwerp under H. Van der Poorten and in Paris under Horace Vernet, a renowned painter of historical and military scenes. He lived in The Hague in 1824 and again between 1831 and 1853. During this time, he worked with Andreas Schelfhout and Louis Meijer.
