A pair of allegorical paintings with children and birds was executed by important Hungarian-Austrian painter Josef Arpád Koppay ( 1857 Badgastein (Salzburg) - 1927). Raised in Budapest, he studied architecture there and in Vienna. After serving as a lieutenant in the 1878 campaign, he turned to painting, becoming a student of Makart and Canon. From 1884, he worked in Munich, where his pastel "King Ludwig II on the State Bed" (1886) brought him recognition. In 1887, he was appointed court painter in Madrid, then moved to Paris and London, and from 1890 to 1894 worked in Berlin. From 1904 onward, he was primarily occupied with portrait commissions in Vienna. From 1904, he spent time each year in America, where his swiftly and virtuously painted state portraits were particularly well-received. From 1911, he lived in England, and during the First World War, he resided in Switzerland.
