Genre scene in a Dutch inn by Hendricus Johannes Scheeres ( 1829 The Hague - 1864 The Hague).  He was a Dutch genre painter and lithographer.

At the age of eleven, Hendricus Johannes Scheeres became a pupil of Hubertus van Hove Bzn. Nothing is known about his further artistic training.

In 1849, he participated in his first art exhibition. He began working as a freelance genre painter at a very early age. He painted scenes from life in the Netherlands during the 17th century.

Inscription: signed and dated (18)56 lower left.

Technique: oil on wood. Original gilt  frame of 19th century.

Measurements: unframed w 6 7/8" x h 7 1/2 " (17,5 x 19,2 cm), framed w 15 " x h 15 3/4" (38,2 x 40 cm).

Condition: in good condition.
