This painting with Maria and Jesus child  was created in Florence  and framed here in a extremely fine hand- crafted and gilt wooden frame around 1800  by an Italian follower of famous early Renaissance painter Fra Angelico (1395 - 1455).

This masterfully framed painting mounted on wooden semi-oval board upholstered in velvet.

Provenance: on the back of the painting is original gift inscription in French: "Souvenir de la Princesse de Merode, Rixensart, 1949“. It means, the gift is of a  Princess Maria de Merode from the  Belgian noble house Merode  in the castle Rixensart.

Fra Angelico was  born in Florence, between 1420 and 1422 he entered a monastery the San Domenico at Fiesole. He painted altarpieces and manuscripts. Linaiuoli Altarpiece, a triptych enclosed in a marble shrine, was an early masterpiece, but he went on to paint famous frescoes at the monastery of San Marco in Florence and a chapel in the Vatican. He died in 1455 .

Inscription: unsigned, on the back of the wood is two memory inscriptions: 1. name and adress in Florence of the author - follower of Fra Angelico; 2.  Memory gift inscription in French: Souvenir de la princesses Maria de Merode, Rixengart, 1949.

Technique:  oil and gold on wood. Original period hand-crafted and gold-plated wood frame, mounted later on wooden semi-oval board upholstered in velvet.

Measurements:  unframed w 5 1/2" x h 13 1/3"(14 x 23,5 cm), framed w 9 1/2" x h 17 1/4" (25 x 39,5cm), total with wooden board  (35 x 45,5cm).

Condition: painting and frame are good condition.
