This antique oval portrait from the late 18th century by an German Classicist depicts a gentleman in profile, set in an original gilt frame.
The sitter wears powdered white hair, a white cravat, and a brown coat over a yellow waistcoat. The portrait is in the classic profile format as a medallion on canvas in a profiled oval frame. This portrait depicts, probably, Johann Georg Justus Perthes ( 1749, in Rudolstadt - 1816 Gotha) the famous German bookseller and publisher.
Inscription: unsigned, on the back is inscription of previous owner with attributation to the hand of Jean Baptist Jacques Augustin.
Technique: painted in oval, oil on canvas, laid down on wood, original period gilt frame.
Measurements: unframed 6 1/2" x 8" (16,5 x 20,5 cm), framed 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" ( 21,5 x 26,5 cm).
