Masterfully miniature drawing was executed in the late 18th century/early 19th century by an Austrian or German painter. It depicts subject from the Bible: in the biblical account of Acts 12, St. Peter is miraculously freed by an angel. King Herod had imprisoned Peter, intending to execute him after Passover. That night, an angel appeared to Peter in his cell, striking him and waking him up. The angel's touch caused Peter's chains to fall off, and the angel instructed him to get dressed and follow. They passed by guards and through a gate that opened on its own, and the angel then left Peter in the city. Peter, realizing it was a divine intervention, went to the house of Mary, where believers were praying, and shared his miraculous escape.
