Masterfully portrait drawing of a young gentleman was executed in 1822 by French painter and lithographer Julien Léopold Boilly (1796 - Paris - 1874 ), also known as Jules Boilly.

Julien Léopold Boilly was the son and student of the artist Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761–1845). He attended school in Versailles and was a student of Antoine-Jean Gros. From 1814 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1826 he undertook a trip to Italy. Among other things, he created 73 watercolor caricatures of members of the Institut de France,  including the French mathematician Adrien-Marie Legendre, the only known image of him. Boilly was also known as a collector of drawings, books, and autographs. His collection of drawings was auctioned in Paris in 1869, the rest of his collections after his death in 1874 in Paris.
