View of the village Scuol Engadin in the Swiss canton Graubünden was executed by Carinthian painter, sculptor and graphic artist Paul Leopold Kassecker (1903 Villach - 1992 Aflenz Kurort).
Scuol (German: Schuls) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It belongs to the Engiadina Bassa/Val Müstair region.
The author Kassecker acquired the foundations of his artistic training at the School of Applied Arts in Graz from 1922 to 1926. He then transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he received the Academy Prize and the Golden Füger Medal in 1929 and the State Prize in 1930. After completing his studies, Kassecker lived in Graz, where he participated in numerous exhibitions and received further awards.
During World War II, from 1939 to 1945, he served as a war artist and press illustrator for a communications unit, including in Lapland.
As early as 1934, he chose Aflenz Kurort as his permanent residence, where he was able to ideally combine his artistic pursuits with his passion for sports. Mountaineering and especially skiing were among his passions.
Kassacker became known primarily as a landscape painter, finding his subjects mostly in the Hochschwab mountain range. Initially, he was influenced by the Austrian painters Albin Egger-Lienz and Alfons Walde, but from the 1950s onward, he also experimented with the possibilities of abstract composition.
